 Mettler Studios' Creative Dance Teacher Training
provides a full-immersion experience of individual and group dance improvisation
 and strategies for teaching
 for all ages and abilities.The work is based on principles developed by Barbara Mettler

WORKSHOP STRUCTURE

Daily sessions M-F, 9:00 am - 4:30 pm with a two hour lunch break
Follow-up mentoring program by phone and email
Optional Practice Teaching Day: Saturday July 21.




PURPOSE
  • To cultivate the natural creative movement resources of individuals and groups
  • To study and practice movement as a medium of creative expression
  • To explore the use of the body as instrument and movement as the material of dance
  • To provide teachers with the necessary tools for teaching creative dance

WORKSHOP MATERIALS
    • Individual and group improvisation studies in the materials of dance, including themes such as:
      • the kinesthetic sense as a guide for discovering movement forms
      • force, time and space and their connections to drama, music, and visual arts
      • organic form, where movements and themes evolve naturally one from another
      • the unity of sound and movement
      • dance with the environment
      • building skills for group dance improvisation
    • Directed exercises
    • Discussion of principles of dance and how they apply to teaching
    • Materials and methods of teaching creative dance and improvisation on all levels
    • Adaptation of materials to specific teaching endeavors according to the interests of the workshop participants

Recommended text: Creative Dance and Learning by Mary Ann Brehm and Lynne McNett (available online)

WORKSHOP LEADERS

 Griff Goehring  and Mary Ann Brehm have taught workshops together since 2007. Both were members of Barbara Mettler’s professional groups and served as Mettler’s teaching assistant.

Griff
 has worked with  children and adults in educational, recreational and therapeutic settings since 1980. She is the founder and director of Green Mountain Creative Dance Center in Vermont and adjunct faculty at Hampshire College in Massachusetts. She is also a past  president of the International Association for Creative Dance.

Mary Ann has taught adult classes at the Tucson Creative Dance Center for over 20 years and has worked extensively with children in school settings. She has been a faculty member in the Creative Arts and Learning Master’s Program at Lesley University. She is the board president of Mettler Studios and a past president of the International Association for Creative Dance. Mary Ann has recently compiled a series of  Barbara Mettler's lessons with video clips of Mettler teaching. She has a  PhD in dance from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.


FOLLOW UP PROGRAM   
Mary Ann facilities a follow up program to mentor workshop participants in their application of the workshop material to teaching, therapeutic, and life settings.  Typically participants email lesson plans or teaching ideas to Mary Ann and online discussion ensues. Telephone mentoring and videos of classes can also be included.

Optional Practice Teaching Day,  July 21.  All workshop participants will have the opportunity to present a short Mettler-based lesson on Saturday to other workshop participants and Tucson dancers.  Feedback on the lesson will be provide by Mary Ann.  All participants are welcome to be a part of this day, whether they wish to teach or not.  Please make travel plans with this opportunity in mind.

FINANCIAL AID
Tuition assistance and housing subsidies are available to workshop participants who also participate in the Follow up program. Please indicate on your registration if you will be needing financial assistance in order to attend the workshop or contact Mary Ann Brehm  mabdance@aol.com

HOUSING
We recommend that participants stay at the Homewood Suites at St. Phillips Plaza on North Campbell Avenue.  A block of rooms will be reserved for our workshop participants and family at a reduced rate. Please use the Mettler Dance Studio group if you are staying at the Homewood Suites.

The Homewood Suites is about 2 miles from the dance studio.  The suites have both a bedroom and living room.  It features a full kitchen, complementary breakfast and light dinner (M-R), shuttle service within 5 miles and is near a bus line, restaurants, Trader Joe's, and a bike/walking path. We have stayed there for many years love it!
